Starbucks closes Beijing branch

A controversial Starbucks coffee shop in the Forbidden City, the former imperial palace at the heart of Beijing, has closed its doors after years of opposition.

Host: welcome back, now hold the Grande Cappuccino, the coffee chain Starbucks has been forced to close its branch in Beijing's Forbidden City. The company said the decision to close had been congenial, but since the café opened 7 years ago, it's become the target of an increasingly widespread protest campaign, claiming it tramples over Chinese culture. Here's Harry Fawcett.

Harry: Starbucks was here by invitation, the authorities who run the Forbidden City – Beijing's enormous 15th-century imperial palace complex, encouraged the small, almost invisible franchise
特权 of the global chain to open in 2000, a sign of a modern outward looking China as it prepared for the Olympics in 2008. But within weeks, the shop was the target of vehement激烈的 opposition; a blight, it was said, on the Chinese cultural treasure and world heritage site. Tourists too, seemed to find it at best a curiosity.

Tourist: it doesn't look like one, I don't see a sign, but watch.

This is a forbidden green tea cappuccino, and it tastes like, er, ice grass, but you know plasmids
质粒 so it is just delicious all the same.

Harry: the campaign to remove the café took off earlier this year when a blog by / influential Chinese newsreader Rui Chenggang in which he called on / Starbucks to pull out was featured
特写 heavily in the media. Thousands supported his stands and museum managers eventually bowed to the pressure.

Manager: we talked to Starbucks, and they've had some alternative plans, so they agreed to move out of the Forbidden City.

Harry: while some visitors today were disappointed to be denied their lattes, others were fully in favor.

Visitors: It's better, it's harmed the traditional culture.

Visitors: I think it doesn't belong into the Forbidden City. It's not…should not be as commercialized like that.

Harry: in fact, commercialization is hardly new here; the for-now locked-up café is already being made over into one of many souvenir shops on the site. Starbucks says it respects the decision and with more than 250 outlets / already in China, its most important market after the U.S., the company can afford to be sanguine
乐观 about this one bit of forbidden territory地域区域.

Host: Harry Fawcett., now tonight…

INTERVIEW

Good morning.

I want to say, at the beginning of this , it just has a kind of sleazy
廉价的质地差的, superficial feel towards people looking for billionaires to marry. But that’s what this article is about, isn’t it?

Well, it has the same feel to me too. But this article is largely commenting on the fact that this is happening, this is out there. I mean I have been here for ten years, Money Magazine for ten years, we have never written about anything like this before. And that’s because it’s never existed until now in a big way.

Because there are so many billionaires, you mean at this point.

Right, there are 946 billionaires right now in the world. For the first time, the whole Forbes
福布斯杂志400 was billionaires in the United States. If you go one tier down, there are about 85,000 people in this country with wealth of 30 million dollars or more, and it’s easier to find them if this is something that you are looking for, because there are dating services, dating websites that focus on helping people find other people with money.

That are directly related to that, you’re saying, (Yeah, ...) that you go to just for that.

That, they have names like Millionaire Match. com.

Are these women looking for men, are these men looking for women, is it a little bit of both or?

It’s definitely a little bit of both. There are more billionaires who happen to be men of the 946. Only about 40 are women. So if you are dead set
决心 on a billionaire, you are going to have a tough time finding one who is a woman. However, I think we only in talk about this whole phenomenon of older women, younger men; we are actually talking about richer women, poorer men. Which we are just not saying it.

The whole cougar thing…(
A 35+ year old female who is on the "hunt" for a much younger, energetic, willing-to-do-anything male.)

Exactly, the cougar thing, age of love and all of that.

So a man or a woman who wants to find themselves a billionaire, besides the websites they can go to, what else is out there?

Well, you have to figure out where the billionaires are to begin with. And that means looking in the different industries where they exist. About half of all billionaires that Money looked at, and they took a very scientific approach to this study, found that their mates at work. So if this is something that you are up for, then you may want to go out there, get yourself an MBA or get a job in finance or in the investment world which is where most billionaires these days happen to work.

A point, what a cynical thing you are saying, get yourself an MBA so you can find yourself a billionaire.

Look, this is not how I want my daughter, or my son, for that matter out there dating. I want my kids to have their own money, as I am sure you do. Because when you have the money in the relationship, you have the power in the relationship, that’s just the way it works. And so you need to know what you want in another person, but you know, there are people out there who say I want this, I want to be wealthy, and this is one way to get there.

Ok, so besides getting the MBA, whatever it is, will get you closer to the person who is wealthy, what else can you do?

Well, you can look for common interest. I mean if you look at the things that billionaires or very very wealthy people do, they tend to spend a lot of money on luxury items, so focusing your interest on real estate or art galleries, or collecting, you might get involved in charities where they are likely to be. If you don’t have enough money to buy a ticket to their great ball of the year, well, then be volunteer. But gets, get yourself in there in a way that you are interested in the subject also. I think that it’s not easy to fake these things, and the good news is that many many billionaires these days seem to be marrying for smarts as well as for money, they are not looking for people who can not carry on a conversation.

Yeah, I was just going to say what’s in there for the billionaire?

I think in a lot of cases, you have to ask that question, because if you are dating somebody who has all the money in the relationship, you need to know upfront what you are giving, otherwise you are going to be in trouble on the back end.

But this whole premise of marrying somebody for money, with that is the gold, isn’t that like buying a house whose foundation is send essentially.

I think in a large number of cases, it can be. And that’s why if you go into that kind of a marriage, you’d better have a prime up , and it’d better be tight, you’d better have your own lawyer negotiating it for you.

All right, Jean Chatzky, thanks so much,(Sure) ,nice to see you.

 CNN 2007-07-13

From the CNN Center in Atlanta, I am Nicole Lapin. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

A security scare that forced a London-bound American Airlines flight to make an emergency landing in New York, but now officials say it was all of a big misunderstanding. The pilot landed at New York's JFK airport after a flight attendant said she had seen one of the passengers taking an employee bus
班车 to a departure gate登机口 in Los Angeles and basically bypassing airport security. But after checking out surveillance监视监督 video, US officials did determine that the man was not on an employee bus after all, and he did go through the regular security screening.

Other news around the country right now. A FedEx package that had been beeping
哔哔响 arrived at the Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards' headquarters this morning. Authorities urged Edwards' campaign staff to evacuate just as a precaution防范预防. Authorities are still investigating that package. But it is the third time that authorities have responded to letters addressed to the Chapel Hill, North Carolina office for John Edwards. In both previous instances, the packages turned out to be nothing though.

And some drivers really had to scramble to get to the top of their cars when a massive water main break flooded part of Interstate
洲际 96 near Detroit. Rescue and utility crews pulled them to safety, luckily. But earlier reports from officials on the scene indicate that the break might have been caused by somebody striking a fire hydrant消防栓. Crews have been able to shut off the water since then. But now the tour of cleaning up starts to take place.

And in South Dakota, the state has carried out its very first execution in its 60 years. Elijah Page died by a lethal
致命的injection for the 2000 torture and murder of a 19-year-old man. Page gave up his remaining appeals. South Dakota's governor postponed Page's execution last spring over 跳过concerns about drugs used for lethal injection but those drugs were later changed.

And switching gears
换齿轮 just a little bit. Breaking was centuries-old traditions. Some Britains in the lower courts are no longer required to wear wigs. We are talking about judges and lawyers here. A new dress rule in place适当,在适当的位置 means that wigs are no longer needed in civil or family court 民事法庭家事法庭cases, as they still may be worn in criminal courts. But in recent review, many thought that the wigs were simply uncomfortable and quite frankly, very expensive. A judge's wig can actually cost 3,000 bucks.

Those are the headlines at this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is always your source whether you are watching online, watching on TV or watching on your cell phone. Thanks so much for watching.

'Transformers':

A Toy Story Waiting on a Recall

It must be summer because a new Michael Bay film is in theaters. He directed Armageddon on the Rock, Pearl Harbor, and now Transformers. Los Angeles Times and Morning Edition film critic Kenneth Turan has this review.

Once upon a time, within the memory of those still living, if a film was successful, it inspired of toys. Now, apparently,
it's the other way around.

Transformers is based not on a novel or a play or a screenwriter's inspiration, but on a line of hasbro toys which have been hot tickets for more than 20 years. If you revere those toys, you already know that. If you don't, there isn't enormous reason to care.

Transformers, as any small boy can tell you, are robots from outer space with the ability to change shape to cars and other machines. Having fought each other for
eons永世 on their home planet, the good-guy Autobots and evil Decepticons transfer their battle to planet Earth, the improbable new home to an enormous object that is a source of all Transformer life.

"An emergency Pentagon call, I need you. Do you understand / it's an emergency Pentagon..Ah....."

Paradoxically矛盾的是, the problem with the movie is not with those Transformers. Computer technology has insured that watching these enormous toys come to life is everything fans could hope for. If this film were a lot shorter than its inflated使膨胀 2 hours and 23 minutes, and kept its focus on the toys, it would be hard to argue with.

Humans, however, inevitably enter the story. The Transformers turn out to be looking for an 11th-grader played by Shia LaBoeuf, who spends his time dreaming about a potential girlfriend (as well as his first car).

"Considering the semi-classic nature of the vehicle with the
slick灵活的 wheel and the cunstum paint job. "

"We have the...But the paint is faded."

"Yeah.., but it is
custom定制的. "

"Is the custom faded ? "

"Well, it is your first car, and I don't expect you to understand."

Too much of Transformers is spent with teenagers — who, as the key audience
demographic人口统计学的, are fated to save the world.

The actors who play them look as much like 11th graders as I do, but the film has bigger problems, like keeping everyone awake while the toys are off the screen. Any film whose most
resonant 引起共鸣的line of dialogue is spoken by a robot who says, "It's you and me, Megatron" has no business being 2 hours and 23 minutes long — no matter how good the toys are.

Kenneth Turan reviews movies for Morning Edition and the Los Angeles’ Times.

This morning, on Today’s Money, love and dollars, or loves of dollars. In this July issue Money Magazine takes a look at people who are on the hunt for billionaires. But what are the pitfalls when you hunt for a partner with money? Money Magazine’s Jean Chatzky is today’s financial editor, Jean, good morning to you.

The dangers of online photos

Last week, Miss New Jersey told us how someone was trying to blackmail勒索 her, threatening to make public embarrassing photographs that she posted on her Facebook page. MySpace and Facebook collectively garner储存 more than 90 million users posting personal information and photos. The stories of Miss New Jersey and that of American Idol contestant Antonella Barbara offer a sobering使人清醒的,严肃的 reminder. Even pictures meant to be kept private have a way of becoming public. And while devastating灾难性的 for her, the case of Miss New Jersey provides a valuable lesson for all Internet users.

And if you are a parent, and you have got teenagers, daughter, sons, and, and ,and this kinda, this Facebook craze, this MySpace craze is part of their daily
socialization社会化, how do you convince them that what can seem fun at one moment can become a nightmare / another moment.

Well, first of all, I think what Miss New Jersey did is, it probably did more for all of this than anybody of us could do. And so I think what you do (is) you talk to your child, you explain it to them , and then you have to supervise them.
That’s the key word; you have to supervise your kids online.

Exactly, and that’s where we say you do not have control, and so if you want to send photos to your friends or families, send them an email with that on. It doesn’t have to go into this
public sphere.
And it’s easy, most parents think that the technology is a
bafflement障碍 beyond them, but it’s really very simple to start your own account, to go in, and be able to look and see what your children are doing.

But other kids who are squally多风波的,不安宁的 and impulsive冲动 and you don’t trust their judgement.

It's not private. And you wouldn't let your kids to go down the dark alley without supervision. Don’t let them to go into the dark alley of the Internet without supervision.
